Record- breaking interest in Gothia Cup – registrations pouring in

Opening ceremony Gothia Cup 2025

Soon after Gothia Cup opened registration for next year’s tournament, it is clear that interest has never been greater. Compared to the same period last year, the number of registered teams is three times higher.
– We are stronger than ever, says Niclas Freiholtz, Tournament Director of Gothia Cup.

Last year set a new record for how quickly spots filled up in Gothia Cup – but this year’s start indicates that yet another historic level may be reached.
– It’s fantastic to see such enormous interest right from the beginning. Gothia Cup is a meeting place that means a lot to clubs all around the world. This response shows that the tournament continues to be a natural part of the football world and more relevant than ever, says Tournament Director Niclas Freiholtz.

Last year, registration closed in November and there is a strong likelihood that it will happen even earlier this year.
– Our experience is that many teams usually wait a while before signing up. Now we see that the best thing to do is not to wait. The pace of registrations means there is a real risk that spots will run out much earlier than even we expected, says the tournament director.

Category D, which covers local teams, is already closed. Because the demand from local teams is so high compared to the number of spots, this year a drew was held for the first time to decide which teams will secure a place in Gothia Cup 2026.
– It is of course unfortunate to see local teams left without a spot, but we still hope that this system will be perceived as fairer, says Niclas Freiholtz.
